Many of the clichés of Western movies are shown in this film, which sees the sheriff John T. Chance (John Wayne) dealing with a group of bandits led by the evil and sadistic Nathan Burdette (John Russell), a wealthy landowner of the place, whose band is responsible for repeated violence and crimes in the town of Rio Bravo. Chance
arrested for murder Joe Burdett, the brother of Nathan, but the gesture cost him the growing hostility of the local squire.
